The method
Created in the 1920s by Joseph H. Pilates, the method focuses on correct body alignment through neuromuscular retraining. With a series of precise movements, Pilates is an effective form of exercise and rehabilitation that improves concentration, refines posture and lengthens muscle. It focuses attention on core postural muscles that provide support for the spine.
Joseph Pilates, “Joe”
Joseph H. Pilates was born in Germany, in 1880. He was a child who suffered from asthma and rheumatic fever. He dedicated his entire life to improving his physical strength. He studied body-building, yoga and gymnastics, and when he moved to England in 1912, he could find several jobs as boxer, circus-performer and self-defense trainer for policemen !
During World War I he was interned with other German citizens in a camp where he trained other inmates. He began here to invent exercices that are the beginnings of the Pilates Method.
After Worl War 1, Pilates migrated to the USA and founded his studio. Well-known dancers such as George Balanchine and Martha Graham sent their students to him for training and rehabilitation.
